Ireland is part of the European Union. That is why the same routes are open to you in Austria as to all EU citizens. You can work, study, start a business or simply live in Vienna. What matters most are two registrations in the first months. This guide explains what to do and when.
Your status as an Irish citizen
You are an EU citizen. You may stay for up to three months without further conditions. For a longer stay, you need a reason recognised under EU law:
- employment or self-employment in Austria, or
- sufficient means of subsistence and comprehensive health insurance cover, or
- education or training, together with sufficient funds and health insurance.
After five years of lawful and continuous residence, you have the right of permanent residence. Read more: Permanent residence and Citizenship.
Entry and where to apply
You enter with your passport or identity card. You do not submit an application at the embassy. You complete all steps in Austria:
| Step | Deadline | Office |
|---|---|---|
| Register your residence (Meldezettel) | within three days | Registration office (Meldebehörde) |
| Registration certificate | within four months of entry | in Vienna: MA 35, “EEA” unit |
You must apply in person. The fee is €44. You present your passport or identity card and proof, for example a confirmation from your employer or an extract from the trade register.
Family members from third countries receive a residence card (Aufenthaltskarte) on application.
Your point of contact in Ireland is the Austrian Embassy in Dublin.
Working in Austria
Workers from the EU have free access to the labour market. You work on the same terms as Austrians. Your employer registers you for social insurance and must give you a confirmation of this. The checklist for EU citizens helps you get started.
The Red-White-Red Card and the EU Blue Card are routes for third-country nationals. You do not need them.
Studying in Austria
You do not need a separate student residence permit. For the registration certificate, you prove your studies, sufficient funds and health insurance.
At public universities, EU citizens pay a tuition fee (Studienbeitrag) of €363.36 per semester only if they exceed the standard duration of their programme by more than two semesters.
Starting a company and investing
You may work as a self-employed person in Austria and found companies. You do not need a residence permit as a founder. Your tax number or an extract from the trade register, for example, serves as proof for the registration certificate.
You may register and carry on a trade just like Austrians, unless it is reserved for Austrian nationals. For regulated trades, the provincial governor (Landeshauptmann) can recognise your foreign qualification or professional experience as a certificate of competence (Befähigungsnachweis).
