The short answer in 30 seconds
- US citizens can enter without a visa for short stays, as a rule for up to 90 days within any 180-day period (BMI – visa list, BMI – entry).
- As a visa-free traveller, you may also apply for your first residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) in Austria. However, this does not extend your permitted visa-free stay (oesterreich.gv.at).
- You do not need a separate job-seeker visa to look for work (migration.gv.at).
- The USA is a partner in the Working Holiday Programme for people aged 18 to 30 (oesterreich.gv.at).
- There is a social security agreement and a double taxation agreement (Ministry of Social Affairs, BMF).
Many Americans know Vienna from a trip, an exchange semester or a company project. If you want to stay, you start from a strong position: entry is visa-free, and you can often apply from within Austria. Even so, a longer stay always requires the right residence permit. This guide shows you the most important routes. The authority decides on your application.
Your status as a US citizen
You are a third-country national, but exempt from the EU visa requirement (BMI – countries requiring a visa). For short stays, the rule is generally 90 days within any 180-day period. If you want to settle or work long term, you need a residence permit (BMI – entry).
Since 10 April 2026, the Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational. It also records visa-free travellers on short stays (BMI – EES). The BMI has announced the ETIAS travel authorisation (€7, valid for three years) from the fourth quarter of 2026. Check before you travel whether it already applies (BMI – ETIAS).
Entry and where to apply
You have two options:
| Route | Where | Important |
|---|---|---|
| Application abroad | Consular Section of the Austrian Embassy in Washington | in person, before entry |
| Application in Austria | residence authority in Austria; in Vienna, the MA 35 | only during your permitted visa-free stay |
Applying in Austria is convenient, but it has one limit: it does not extend your right to stay. If your visa-free period runs out, you must leave and wait for the decision abroad (oesterreich.gv.at, migration.gv.at). So plan early.
Working in Austria
The most important route is the Red-White-Red Card (Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte). For “Other Key Workers” (Sonstige Schlüsselkräfte), the 2026 requirements are a minimum salary of €3,465 gross per month plus special payments and at least 55 points. For graduates with a good salary, the EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU) is also an option.
One advantage for you: because you enter visa-free, you do not need a job-seeker visa. If you find a suitable job during your stay, you can apply for the card directly in Austria (migration.gv.at).
Working Holiday: Austria and the USA have a Working Holiday Programme. Young people aged 18 to 30 can come for six or twelve months and work during that time. Wage and social security rules apply to them as well (oesterreich.gv.at). The Austrian embassy or consulate can give you the details.
Studying in Austria
To study, you need the “Residence Permit – Student” (Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Student). As a visa-free traveller, you can apply after entering Austria. Alongside your studies, you may work up to 20 hours per week; your employer needs a permit from the AMS for this (migration.gv.at). Read more: Studying in Austria and Staying after your studies.
Starting a company and investing
How to found an Austrian company is explained in Founding a GmbH or FlexCo. If you want to live in Austria yourself and work in the business, you also need a residence permit:
- Self-employed Key Worker (Selbständige Schlüsselkraft), for example with an investment of €100,000.
- Start-up Founder Card (Start-up-Gründer-Karte) with at least €30,000 in capital and 50 points.
- Branch office (Zweigniederlassung) of a US company.
Would you like to live in Austria without working, for example in retirement? For this there is the “Settlement Permit – except gainful employment” (Niederlassungsbewilligung – ausgenommen Erwerbstätigkeit). It is subject to a quota. In 2026, single persons must prove a regular income of at least €2,616.78 per month, married couples €4,128.24 (migration.gv.at). If you only want to invest capital: Investing without relocating.
Real estate
As a US citizen, you count as a foreigner when acquiring property. As a rule, you need approval under the land transfer law (Grundverkehrsrecht) of the respective federal province; in Vienna, under the Vienna Act on Property Acquisition by Foreigners (Wiener Ausländergrunderwerbsgesetz). Read more: Buying property as a foreigner.
Taxes and social security
- Social security: Austria and the USA have a social security agreement (Ministry of Social Affairs).
- Taxes: There is a double taxation agreement (BMF – list of DTAs, BMF – DTA partner states).
Our partner tax advisers will work out with you how both affect your income.
Qualifications and driving licence
For regulated professions, your qualification must be recognised in Austria. Clarify this early, ideally before you apply for a residence permit.
You may use your US driving licence for six months after taking up residence. Within this period, you must have it exchanged. For category B, US licence holders do not have to take the practical driving test (oesterreich.gv.at).
Business links between the USA and Austria
The Austrian Economic Chamber (Wirtschaftskammer) is represented in the USA by foreign trade centres (AußenwirtschaftsCenter) in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington (WKO – US economic situation). You will find current market information, customs topics and events on the WKO country page for the USA. For US companies looking for a location in Vienna, these offices are a good first point of contact with Austrian partners.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter as a tourist and then apply for a residence permit in Austria? Yes. As a visa-free traveller, you may submit your first application in Austria. However, you must leave when your visa-free period ends and no decision has been made yet (oesterreich.gv.at).
May I work during my visa-free stay? For employment that is not merely temporary, you need a residence permit. There is a separate visa for temporary work; ask the Austrian embassy or consulate in advance (BMI – entry).
Do I have to take my driving test again? No. For category B, an exchange without a practical test is enough, provided you meet the six-month deadline (oesterreich.gv.at).
Will I pay into two pension systems? The social security agreement determines which country’s rules apply. Have your case reviewed individually.
